WiSE (Women in STEM Experience) is an initiative that seeks to support women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through mentorship and networking in the hopes of narrowing the existing gender gap in STEM studies and careers. Through WiSE, students studying science and math related fields have the opportunity to network with peers, faculty, alumni, and professionals. These connections are designed to help students develop skills in professionalism and build confidence in their career pursuits.
The hallmark event of the WiSE initiative is an annual symposium. The 2017 WiSE Symposium themed “Empowering You: The Future of STEM ” will be held March 3-4, 2017 at the University of Alabama Bryant Conference Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. WiSE (Women in STEM Experience) was born from within the University’s Graduate School Tide Together initiative that seeks to support women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through mentorship and networking in the hopes of narrowing the existing gender gap in STEM studies and careers. Since its inception in 2012, WiSE has become its own stand-alone initiative with the support of multiple colleges and departments on campus, as well as community and corporate sponsors. Through WiSE, students studying science and math related fields have the opportunity network with peers, faculty, alumni, and professionals. These connections are designed to help students develop skills in professionalism and build confidence in their career pursuits.
